Snaggle-Tooth Fences

   Square 2x2 pickets in a fence should ideally be spaced 1-1/2" apart, with an absolute maximum of a 2" spacing. Greater spacings make the fence look like it's "missing teeth".

Fence Differences

   Fences in a neighborhood need to be different from every other fence in that neighborhood in at least one way except that they need to be different from fences next door in at least three ways, including the picket design.

When the Rules Aren't Right

   The side yard terrace in this video violates all sorts of rules, from the city zoning ordinance to the neighborhood pattern book, but it does no harm. Rather, it illustrates the fact that when we see something good that violates the rules, maybe we should look into changing the rules.

Where's the Planting?

   If you set your fence back from the sidewalk, plant something there! Otherwise, you have an ugly strip of mulch, or a bit of grass that's really hard to mow.
