Square 2x2 pickets in a fence should ideally be spaced 1-1/2" apart, with an absolute maximum of a 2" spacing. Greater spacings make the fence look like it's "missing teeth".

Fences in a neighborhood need to be different from every other fence in that neighborhood in at least one way except that they need to be different from fences next door in at least three ways, including the picket design.
